1969: Grassy park may
replace Queen’s Surf
night spot

IF THE Queen's Surf is torn down, it will be the first time in the country that grass legally replaces booze. (April 17, 1969) ... Attorney Pete Donahoe arrived back in Honolulu yesterday morning from his new Swiss residence, thereby clearing up a bit of a mystery. Monday we received a telegram which stated, "Flight 761 delayed London. Will call on arrival. Peter." Yesterday Donahoe explained: "We had a long delay in London so TWA offered to send free telegrams for everyone on board. I couldn't think of any reason to send one to anybody, but decided to take them up on it anyway." (April 18, 1973) ...

YOU can expect a lot of local entertainers to show up at 4 p.m. tomorrow at Hosoi Mortuary for the funeral of Keone's owner Johnny Uyehara. He was an extremely popular figure among singers and musicians and many of them used to turn up nightly at his late night club to do a turn after their shows were pau. Keone's, which has been closed for a week in his memory, will reopen Monday with the five surviving Uyehara brothers participating in its operation. (April 19, 1974) ...

The "A's" have it. What an easy choice it was for Paul Anka when he took daughters Annie, Amelia, Alexandria and Amanda Anka on a neighbor island jaunt. Naturally they flew Aloha Airlines. (April 15, 1985) ... Suggested attire is "Sarongs & Silkies" for the party Andre and Jane Tatibouet and Lexy Anderson Capp are throwing to introduce the Miss Hawaiian Tropic beauty contestants Friday. Besides the 37 beauties who'll be here, honored guests will include Glen Campbell, Paul Williams, Sonny Bono, Audrey Landers and Lee Meredith. (April 15, 1985) ...

OFT-MARRIED real estate whiz Joe North of the J.S. North Co. Inc -- his most recently divorced wife was called "North the Fourth" -- was among those invited to the opening of Pure Platinum, the new club on Kuhio (site of the old Rascals) where some 50 nude dancers perform on stage for a fee. Naturally he was smitten by a certain beauty, but when he inquired the young dancer's name and she replied, "Chanel," he could think of only one thing: Chanel No. 5. He beat a hasty retreat. (April 17, 1989) ...

WHEN Al Souza Jr. is inducted into the Hawaii Golf Hall of Fame on April 28 at the Hawaii Prince Hotel, you might not be able to tell the Al Souzas without a program. On hand will be the new Hall of Famer's father, Al Souza Sr., who's 85 and something of a golfing legend himself, having shot his age when he was 79. Al Jr. is 55 and his son, Al Souza III, will also be there with his infant son, Al Souza IV, who was born on March 30. All are alive and well, and Al IV is already experimenting with an interlocking grip on his rattle. (April 15, 1996) ...

AND I thought I had an unusual Easter weekend, dining Sunday on calamari steak with pasta in Lahaina. Jimmy Borges and Shari Lynn compared notes and found that Jimmy (the Christian one) spent Friday night at a Passover Seder while Shari (the Jewish one) was enjoying a home-cooked ham with her family. Borges and Lynn not only will be comparing notes, but singing them when they get together on Mother's Day to do a musical tribute to Irving Berlin, whose birthday is the next day. Backed by Jim Howard on piano and Lyle Ritz on acoustic bass, "Borges and Lynn Sing Irvin0g Berlin" at the Atherton Performing Arts Studio at 738 Kaheka St., doing some 50 of his tunes -- he wrote more than 1,500 -- in two shows at 6 and 8 p.m. (April 15, 1998) ...
