Seniors stand tall
in ‘Surfing for Life’

THE hour-long documentary "Surfing for Life," with senior surfers Rabbit Kekai, John Kelly, Woody Brown, Fred Van Dyke and Peter Cole, and narrated by Beau Bridges, airs tonight on KHET at 8:30. Women surfers in the film include Anona Napoleon, Shay Bintliff and Eve Fletcher. The surfers range in age from mid-60s to mid-90s. Rabbit talks of passing on surfing knowledge given to him from Duke Kahanamoku. The shots of monster waves are gorgeous. Scenes of old Hawaii are included. Music in David L. Brown's film is by Gabby Pahinui, the Sons of Hawaii and Tom Disher. A two-page photo spread runs tomorrow in the Sunday New York Times showing surfers in the film at Waimea Bay ...

Hickam aloha and shaka

THE CREW of our spy plane arriving at Hickam Thursday was a feel-good day at the air base. One crewman flashed the shaka sign more than once on national TV. Harry Soria e-mails that he knows the mom of a crewman of the spy plane that was forced down. However, her son was not on the last mission. The crewman says the Chinese pilot came very close on past missions. A photo showing the Chinese jet up close, taken during a previous mission, was included in Harry's e-mail ...

CALIFORNIA Pizza Kitchen launches its line of frozen pizzas here with a benefit for Variety School April 24 at the Kahala Mall CPK, 6 p.m. CPK co-founders Larry Flax and Rick Rosenfield, two lawyers who gave up their legal pads for pizza cutters in 1985, will attend. A buffet dinner of pizza, pasta, salad, beer, wine and dessert is offered at $40 per. All $40 goes to Variety School for kids with special needs. Call 732-2835 ...
