Star-BulletinAfter leading the Bears to a second consecutive state title last month, Baldwin midfielder Nicole Garbin and coach Kawika Keator attained top honors on the Star-Bulletin's All-State girls' soccer team.
Garbin, whose two goals in the state championship game lifted Baldwin over Mililani, was selected the State Player of the Year after consultation with a panel of coaches from around the state, while Keator was named coach of the year. The coaches cited Garbin's combination of strength, skill and smarts in selecting her for the honor.
"She's very dominant physically," Hawaii Preparatory Academy coach Steve Perry said.
"She's a very strong girl with a lot of talent. She can play all over the field. She can score from 40 yards out, and she can score on headers on corner kicks. She can just take control of a game."
Garbin is joined on the first team by teammates forward Shawna Shimomura, midfielder Alana Souza, defender Koren Takeyama and goalkeeper Mahie Atay. While their collective efforts powered Baldwin's title run, Garbin set the pace for the Bears.
"After practice she would run sprints on her own and lift weights," Keator said. "Her presence on the field just lifted everybody else up. And she never grumbled. Whatever I asked her to do she did, no questions asked."
State tournament runner-up Mililani also placed five players on the first-team and James Uson finished second in coach of the year balloting.
The Trojans were led by forward Mele French, who led the OIA in scoring with 29 regular season goals. Joining French are midfielder Jolie Nitta, Mallorie and Jennifer Iha and goalkeeper Eryn Kishimoto.
The OIA East placed two high-scoring forwards on the team.
Kahuku's Natasha Kai scored 18 goals en route to earning Gatorade State Player of the Year honors, while Kailua's Sarah Takekawa netted 10 goals for the Surfriders. Aiea midfielder Joelle Sugai, who shared OIA West co-Player of the Year honors with French, and Pearl City defender Kory Ann Toyama round out the first team.
Keator edged Uson for coach of the year honors for keeping his talent-laden Baldwin squad focused despite living in the cross-hairs of every state title contender this season.
"There was definitely more pressure," Keator said. "Being seeded number one put a lot of pressure on them, but that was our goal because of what everybody was saying. A lot of people didn't believe we were that good."
But by taking a second state championship trophy home to Wailuku this winter, Baldwin certainly made believers of everyone.
"I think it was harder the second time around," Uson said of Keator. "And to keep his troops focused on their goal was a great job on his part."
