Star-BulletinWith the win, the Troubadours tightened their grip on the league lead by improving to 9-0. HBA fell to 7-2.
A change in offensive philosophy at the end of the first half helped spur St. Francis.
"Near the end of the half we started running our secondary offense," Troubadours coach Tony Tyler said. "That offense gets the ball more inside. It made them get closer in and we knew it would give them problems."
The switch allowed St. Francis post players Jamila Jarmon (5-feet-11) and Elizabeth Narkon (6-feet) to maximize their height advantage against the undersized Eagles. They combined to score St. Francis' first 12 points of the second half, often feeding each other for easy buckets. Jarmon finished with a game-high 15 points, while Narkon added 10.
"We practice that a lot," Jarmon said. "We know everyone's going to be collapsing on us so we're looking for each other constantly."
They also were effective defensively, swatting away several HBA shots down the stretch.
"We wanted to penetrate and kick out, but we didn't do a good job of providing our dribblers passing angles," Eagles coach Deren Oshiro said. "Late in the game we just attacked and we did what we knew we couldn't do, which was dribble right up to them and try to shoot over them. And they had three or four clean blocks."
St. Francis' dominance in the paint also translated into points at the foul line. The Troubadours hit 10 of their first 11 free-throws in the second half to take control. Jarmon connected on seven of nine shots from the line.
St. Francis closes the first half of the season with a showdown with second-place Kamehameha (8-1) on Thursday.
