Both the "engine" and the designer of the Mililani High School boys' soccer machine top the Star-Bulletin's All-State team.

After leading Mililani to the state championship last month, Trojans midfielder Jarrett Razon and head coach Jeff Yamamoto were named the state's Player and Coach of the Year, respectively, after consultation with a state-wide panel of coaches.

They are joined on the first team by three other Mililani players.

"(Yamamoto) was able to get the most out of the players he had to achieve the ultimate goal," said Pearl City coach Scott Keopuhiwa.

Razon edged Hilo goalkeeper Eddie Ruhland for Player of the Year honors. Other players scored more than the Mililani senior, but few meant as much to his squad.

"He was the engine of our team," Yamamoto said. "When he played good, our team played good. And he's a great kid. Very coachable."

Ruhland put a seal on the net for Hilo this season to help the Vikings reach the state final. In addition to walling off the goal, he could turn a game with a swing of his leg. Ruhland set a Big Island Interscholastic Federation record last football season with a 48-yard field goal, and won a competition at the Ray Guy kicking camp last summer with a 55-yard boot.

Pearl City's Bobby Shinn, who scored an Oahu Interscholastic Association-high 16 goals this season, is on the first-team's forward line, along with Iolani's Duke Hashimoto (11 goals), Mililani's Blaine Murakami (seven) and Punahou's Charles Rania (eight).

Aiea's Benji Villaflor, Kamehameha's Nathan Silva and Iolani's Travis Watanabe join Razon as first-team midfielders. Both Villaflor, who scored eight goals during the regular season, and Watanabe also received consideration for Player of the Year honors.

On defense, Trojans Timmy Liu and Kahi Hernandez were overwhelming first-team picks. So was Pearl City's Randy Shinn. And Campbell defender Shaunsey Saito played a significant part in the Sabers earning their first-ever state tournament berth.

A year after finishing second in the state, Yamamoto repeats as Coach of the Year. Campbell's Frank Marotti and Hilo's Don Memmer also received votes for guiding their teams to new heights.

"(Mililani) really improved from earlier in the season to the playoffs," Aiea coach Jon Shirafuji said.

"It looked like they made some adjustments, moved some guys around, and it worked out for them."

HPA's Steve Perry said the Trojans were fun to watch.

"From player-one to the last player on the bench they really play team soccer," Perry said. "Considering some of the players they lost last season, (Yamamoto) did a great job of getting them back to that level and winning it this year."
