Army to enact
stricter security

After May, no vehicles
will be allowed on base without
the proper identification

The U.S. Army is stepping up security on all bases in Hawaii. Anyone visiting a base must have either a Department of Defense decal or a temporary pass, according to Schofield Barracks officials.

Army Maj. Cynthia Teramae said that the upgrade in security is unrelated to any recent international incidents. "It's worldwide increased protection measures which have been ongoing for the past several months," Teramae said.

Long-term plans include adding closed-circuit television cameras and other monitoring devices at military entrance gates.

During April and May, Army officials said, security personnel will stop visitors without either a decal or temporary pass at the gate to explain the new procedures and where they can get the decal or the pass.

After May, Army officials said, those without the decal or the pass will have to stop at the gate and be logged in before entering.

Vehicle registration offices are located at Schofield Barracks, Fort Shafter and Tripler Army Medical Center. Visitors must have with them a Department of Defense identification card, valid driver's license, vehicle registration, state safety inspection and proof of insurance.

Requirements for a temporary pass are the same as for the decal, and visitors can apply for them at the same locations listed above.

Army officials said the stricter access will not prevent the public from using recreation facilities such as clubs or golf courses. It will also not prevent access to special events such as the Fourth of July.
