Crosswalk signal could
impact Kalakaua traffic

Question: The city recently built a wonderful walking path from the Convention Center along the Ala Wai Canal, but it's cut by Kalakaua and McCully streets. These are impossible to cross in the middle and the corners with traffic lights are not only far from the path but don't have crosswalks where you need them. Is there a plan to make this nice path more user-friendly? We would love to see crosswalks installed with button-activated traffic lights. It's difficult to use the path the way it is, which is a shame because it's a great addition to our city. Any possibility to this in the near or distant future?

Answer: Not likely, based on a traffic assessment report for the Ala Wai Promenade Phase III project.

That report recommended against installing a signalized crosswalk on Kalakaua between Kapiolani and Ala Wai boulevards because of expected "significant traffic impacts to Kalakaua Avenue," according to Cheryl Soon, director of the city Department of Transportation.

Meanwhile, she said the neighboring community has agreed that the Ala Wai Mauka Bike Path should exit Ala Wai Community Park at the makai-Koko Head corner of the Kapiolani/McCully intersection.

The resulting addition of a bike lane along the Koko Head side of McCully Street, between Ala Wai and Kapiolani boulevards, will result in the elimination of parking on that side of the street, Soon said.

Also, she said the city is considering placing directional signs at the bikeway's Kalakaua Avenue terminals directing bikers to cross at the signalized intersection of Kalakaua and Ala Wai.

Q: Can you tell me who picked up the license for the Kliban cat T-shirts?

A: Sgt. Leisure Inc. has the licensing rights for Kliban clothing in the United States and its territories, Steve Moder, president of Sgt. Leisure, said in a telephone interview from headquarters in Santa Ana, Calif.

There are Sgt. Leisure stores on the Big Island, Maui and Kauai. On Oahu, Moder said there are two B. Kliban Cats by Sgt. Leisure stores in Waikiki -- in the Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center and in the International Marketplace.

Sgt. Leisure obtained the licensing rights to the popular fat striped cats in February 2000. From 1977 to 1999, the clothing rights to the cartoon cat was held by Crazy Shirts.

However, Judith Kliban Bixby, the widow of cartoonist B. Kliban, sued Crazy Shirts in 1999, alleging breach of contract. She terminated the relationship with the Hawaii-based company that year.

Bixby owns all copyright, trademark and other rights to the Kliban cat. B. Kliban died in 1990.

Belatedly, to Jane Nakamura and other Punahou Carnival volunteers, students and others, who kindly assisted me because of my vision, mobility and other problems on Friday, Feb. 2, the first day of the carnival. -- Corinne

Where is our aloha spirit? This means you white (car with license) ETJ -- ! I saw you holding your finger on your horn, speaking on a cellular phone and tailgating a woman driver on the afternoon of Wednesday, March 28, on Waialae Avenue. She had the right of way to turn left. You could have caused an accident. -- No name
