Star-BulletinFSU pounded 17 hits off six UH pitchers as 663 saw the visitors win the three-game Western Athletic Conference series here, 2-1. The Bulldogs took five out of six against the Rainbows this season.
Fresno State (25-16, 9-9 WAC) opens a three-game conference series at Francis Wong Stadium on Thursday against Hawaii-Hilo.
The Rainbows (17-20, 7-14) leave tomorrow night for a six-game Texas road trip that begins Saturday against Texas Christian.
Minor improved to 7-3 with the complete-game effort. He struck out four and walked five.
After the first inning, the only time the Rainbows threatened to cut into the Bulldogs' big lead was the sixth, when they loaded the bases twice but settled for one run on Kevin Gilbride's sacrifice fly.
FSU exploded with four first-inning runs, taking advantage of walks by UH starter and loser Sean Yamashita (2-5).
Dan Young walked on four pitches to open the game and scored when Oscar Lopez grounded a double inches inside the first-base bag and down the line to the right-field corner. One out later, Brandon Gemoll smacked a ball the opposite way into the left-field corner, scoring Lopez. After Casey McGehee walked on a full count, Brad Harper grounded a hard shot just inside the third base bag that scored Gemoll and McGehee.
Harper finished with four hits and two RBIs and McGehee had three hits on the night.
Minor also walked the first UH batter, Matt Purtell. After stealing second and moving to third on a wild pitch, Purtell scored on Patrick Scalabrini's sixth home run, over the right-field fence at the 325-foot sign. It was Hawaii's only extra-base hit of the game.
The Bulldogs regained a four-run margin in the top of the second when Labandeira drove a 2-1 pitch from Yamashita over the left-field wall for his 10th homer of the season. Lopez, who had walked, scored on the homer, giving FSU a 6-2 lead.
Minor, a 6-foot-6 junior right-hander, breezed through the next four innings. The only UH runners were Purtell, who reached on an error in the third, Gilbride, who walked in the fourth but was erased on Brian Bock's inning-ending, double-play grounder, and Lane Nogawa, who singled for UH's second hit in the fifth. He also was eliminated in an inning-ending double play.
The Bulldogs feasted heavily on Rainbow pitching in the fifth inning, rapping out eight hits for six more runs and a 12-2 lead. Labandeira's two-run triple to right was the only extra-base hit of the rally.
Rainbow reliever Chad Giannetti was charged with four of the runs, while Matt Le Duq gave up the other two.
William Quaglieri, Aaron Pribble and Bryan Lee finished up on the mound for Hawaii.
