Anderson, Frei named
PacWest co-MVPs

University of Hawaii-Hilo's Taysha Anderson and Brigham Young-Hawaii's Lyndi Frei were honored as co-Pacific West Conference Players of the Week.

Anderson pitched back-to-back three-hitters in leading the Vulcans to two wins over Chaminade. In 14 innings, Anderson allowed just six hits and two runs, one earned.

Frei blanked Hawaii Pacific on four hits, walking two and striking out five, for her fourth shutout of the season.

UH golfer tied for first at Utah Dixie Classic

Melanie Matsumura shot a one-under 71 to lead the UH women's golf team in the first round of the Utah Dixie Classic yesterday.

Matsumura is tied for first place with San Francisco's Susannah Laing at one-under 71.

San Francisco currently is in the lead.

St. Louis' Lee finishes 5th at nationals

St. Louis School senior Travis Lee earned All-America honors Sunday after placing fifth at the National high School Seniors Wrestling Championship in Easton, Del.

Lee, a three-time state champion, was in the very competitive 119-pound weight class. He defeated Shawn Bunch of Kansas, 7-1, for fifth place.

Three other Hawaii state champions were also at the meet.

Baldwin's Grant Nakamura went 2-2 in the 119-pound class. Troy Takahashi of St. Louis was 0-2 in the 112-pound division, while Mid-Pacific's Jansen Fukuda was 0-2 in the 160-pound class.

Robb ousted in first heat at Rip Curl in Australia

Hawaii's Kalani Robb was eliminated in his first-round heat at the first day of the Rip Curl Pro surf meet yesterday at Bells Beach, Australia, managing a score of 16.05.

Damien Hobgood won the heat with a 18.40, while Australia's Nathan Hedge was second at 17.60.

Robb was the only Hawaii surfer to compete yesterday, as deteriorating conditions postponed the meet after heat 6.

Hawaii's Sunny Garcia is the defending champion.

Hursty dominates in Lavaman Triathlon

Peter Hursty led from start to finish to win Sunday's Lavaman Triathlon in Waikoloa.

Hursty was first out of the water and gradually increased his lead over the field, finishing in 2 hours and 47 seconds. In second, by some four minutes, was Brent Imonen. Monique Mata won the women's division in 2:21:55, some 37 seconds ahead of Tina Eakin.

The course was comprised of a .93-mile swim, 24.8-mile bike ride and a 6.2-mile run.

Egbert first U.S. amateur to qualify for Ironman

Hawaii's Brigitte Egbert was the first American amateur, and 10th female overall, to finish the Minolta Ironman at Forster, Australia, Sunday.

Egbert was timed in 9 hours, 53 minutes and 13 second to win the 25-29 age-group division and qualify for this October's Ironman Triathlon in Kona.

Also competing from Hawaii on Sunday were Chris Tang (9:37:15), Joe Zwack (10:15:08), Bob Egbert (10:22:00), Tanya Florin (12:04:21), Ruthie Wells (14:41:42) and Kenton Eldridge (13:09:59).

Punahou graduate wins Arkansas marathon

Malia Mason, a 1995 Punahou School graduate, won the women's division of the Hogeye Marathon Sunday in Fayetteville, Ark.

Mason, a former cross country and track runner at Rice, was timed in 3 hours, 18 minutes and 1 second, fourth place overall.
