[ UH WARRIOR VOLLEYBALL ]
Hawaii trips It may have been senior night at the Stan Sheriff Center, but it wasn't just the seniors' night to shine.
Alberta again
Sophomore Tony Ching hammers
career-high 20 kills on
UH's senior nightBy Grace Wen
Star-BulletinIn spite of the picketing faculty, the University of Hawaii men's volleyball team drew 3,852 to the Stan Sheriff Center in its final regular season home game. Sophomore Tony Ching hammered a career- and match-high 20 kills to lead the Warriors, while senior Torry Tukuafu notched 13 kills as the Warriors swept the University of Alberta 33-31, 34-32, 30-25.
"I had to step up and carry a little bit but that's just because we were missing the two Europeans," Ching said. "That was a great feeling. I told Kimo (Tuyay) before the game was over that I want my 20."
Ching demonstrated Hawaii's depth at outside hitter as starters Eyal Zimet and Costas Theochardis sat out the match because of injury.
"Tony was studly," UH head coach Mike Wilton said. "He got all of his game back tonight. Last night, he was a little tentative. We were good when we had to be. Tony and Torry carried us."
The two combined for over half the team's kills as Hawaii outhit Alberta .347 to .319.
Pascal Cardinal and Scott Emslie each had 12 kills in the Bears' losing effort.
Hawaii trailed most of Game 1 and was down 24-26 when consecutive blocks by Dejan Miladinovic and Brenton Davis knotted the score. The Golden Bears reached game-point first at 30-29, but clutch hitting by Ching kept Hawaii in the game. A kill by Brenton Davis and a block by freshman Maulia LaBarre ended it.
Game 2 mirrored Game 1 with Hawaii chasing Alberta most of the game.
The Warriors finally tied the score at 25-25 with a kill by Tukuafu. Alberta pushed the Warriors to the limit as it matched Hawaii kill for kill before two hitting errors by the Bears gave UH a 2-0 lead.
Hawaii wasted no time jumping to a 5-1 lead in Game 3. The Bears closed to within one at 8-7 but were never closer as the Warriors pulled away with the game and match.
"We didn't play very well, but we were able to stick it out and come back," Tukuafu said.
Hawaii's next opponent won't be on the court but in the water. As a fund-raiser for the women's water polo team, the Warriors will play water polo against the Rainbow Wahine at 3 p.m. today at the Duke Kahanamoku pool.
On a strike-related note, Wilton confirmed he rode his mo-ped around a professor's picket line Friday, but said the move was in no way a statement against the striking professors.
"I was coming down Waialae on my mo-ped, late from an appointment and thinking about working on game plans for our trip to BYU," Wilton said. "The picket line was stopping people on Waialae and that's dangerous. I made a bad decision."
Wilton was cited for riding a mo-ped on a sidewalk and said he paid a $77 fine for a traffic violation.
