Star-BulletinThe Raiders lead the Interscholastic League of Honolulu race with a 6-2 record. Mid-Pacific fell to 6-3 and into a tie for second place with St. Louis and Punahou.
The win was sweet payback for the Raiders, who were pummeled by the Owls, 12-2, just seven days before.
"We drop one today and it would have been hard to come back and expect to win the regular season, asking somebody else to beat these guys," said Iolani coach Dean Yonamine. "We had to win today, no doubt about it."
The Raiders took a 3-0 lead in the first inning as Kila Kaaihue, Travis Mitsuda and Blaine Umeda tagged Mid-Pacific starter Keric Chang for three consecutive doubles. Kaaihue added to the lead with a solo home run to lead off the third inning. Mid-Pacific got on the scoreboard in the fifth inning on Isaac Omura's sacrifice fly. But Iolani answered with Kala Kaaihue's double to drive in Mitsuda in the bottom of the inning.
Iolani pitcher Corey Yamamoto kept the Owls off balance by mixing his fastball and breaking pitch effectively.
"He struggled a little early, but he caught his second wind about the fifth inning," Yonamine said. "He got tough outs when he had to, that's the main thing."
