Strikes, spy plane

Easter Calendar

Lt. Gov. Mazie Hirono told government and business leaders that they are colleagues "in the struggle for justice and peace and a fair settlement for HSTA and UHPA."

Hawaii is "a community in anguish" because of strikes by the unions representing educators, Hirono said yesterday at the Hawaii Prayer Breakfast.

The strikes were one recent news event targeted for prayer by speakers who included Adm. Dennis Blair, commander in chief of Pacific Forces, and state Senate President Robert Bunda.

More than 1,400 people attended the annual event at Hilton Hawaiian Village.

The Rev. Dan Chun prayed for God's "wisdom to know what to do in terms of the teachers strike (and) the university faculty strike" in a prayer for government leaders.

Mayors Jeremy Harris of Honolulu and James Apana of Maui, Chief Justice Ronald Moon and about 150 state and city lawmakers, department heads and military officers stood while the pastor of First Presbyterian Church asked God to "give them the strength and wisdom needed in the midst of stress and pressure knowing their decisions could affect thousands of people.

"May they have forgiveness in their hearts, meaning to give up the right to retaliate," Chun prayed. Blair asked the crowd to pray for the 24 American spy plane crew members being held by the Chinese, the Chinese pilot missing since the crash and for the leaders making decisions in the case.

Hirono said, "The way in which we solve our problems will determine how lasting our ability to work together will be."

The officials stood with bowed heads as Chun said: "There will be times that the peer pressure and the lobbying and the name-calling will be incredibly intense. "Protect them and give them the courage that right might be done."

Punchbowl allows potted plants
on graves during April

Officials at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific will allow people to place potted plants and artificial flowers at grave sites beginning Tuesday.

The items will be removed from the Punchbowl cemetery on April 23.

Permanent plantings, statues, vigil lights, glass objects and commemorative items, including pinwheels, balloons, stuffed toys or similar articles, are not permitted.

It is requested that items not be secured to headstones or markers and metal hooks not be used to secure plants or other decorations since they present a safety hazard during mowing.

Festival celebrates birth of
Buddha with music, rituals

The birth of Shakyamuni Buddha, founder of Buddhism, about 2,560 years ago, will be celebrated tomorrow with music and ritual by island Buddhists.

Members of several Oahu temples will participate in the Hanamatsuri family day program at 9 a.m. at the Kaimuki High School auditorium. The Rev. Reynold Fujikawa, associate minister at Honpa Hongwanji Hawaii Betsuin, will speak on "Buddhism in Hawaii for the 21st Century."

A ritual of the festival recalls a legend that a dragon from heaven poured scented water on the infant Buddha after his birth. Participants pour sweet tea over a statue of the infant set in a Hanamido, or flower shrine. University of Hawaii students led by the Rev. Masatoshi Shamoto will perform Japanese imperial music. Also featured will be the Hongwanji Mission School children's choir and ukulele band led by Kevin Hughese, vocalist Toko Iwasa, harpist Mary E. Kong and pianist Michiyo Tanigawa.

The Hawaii Buddhist Council sponsors the annual event.

Reorganized Latter-day Saints takes new name

The church known as the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has taken a new name.

Community of Christ is the title that went into effect yesterday for five congregations on Oahu and members worldwide.

Delegates to the church's annual conference last year approved the change as a way to more adequately reflect its theology and mission, according to local spokesman Ralph Aona.

Mormons seek people for genealogy project

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Kaneohe Stake is seeking participation in a genetics research project.

Researchers at Brigham Young University are using DNA to construct genealogies of people around the world. Medical professionals will take blood samples from volunteers for the "Molecular Genealogy" project 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. next Saturday at the Kailua Chapel Cultural Hall, 349 Kailua Rd.

Participants will be required to provide information about ancestors for four generations.

Israeli musician to perform concert

Israeli entertainer Yoel Sharabi will perform in a concert Thursday at the Hyatt Regency Ballroom.

Sharabi, a guitarist and flutist, will present modern Israeli music as well as Yemenite and classic Hassidic melodies.

The event is sponsored by Chabad of Hawaii.

Tickets are $15 and must be purchased in advance by calling Chabad of Hawaii, 735-8161.
