If the teachers' strike wipes out next week's Oahu Interscholastic Association golf championships, Leilehua and Moanalua will claim the league's boys' and girls' team titles, respectively. Strike might

golf titleBy Jason Kaneshiro
Star-BulletinThe Mules and Menehunes finished first in the semifinals held Monday at Makaha Golf Course. The finals are scheduled for April 11 at Waialae Country Club.
Normally, the top two finishers would qualify for the team finals, but the possibility of having the finals canceled gave the semifinal round a championship atmosphere.
"I was telling the coaches this may be the championship," said OIA golf coordinator Duane Izumi. "You could sense there was pressure."
The Leilehua boys' team, led by Nick Mason's round of 73, posted a team score of 313 to claim the top spot in the semifinals. Pearl City finished second with a score of 321. The Chargers were led by Grant Yasui, who finished one stroke behind Mason.
Ayumi Hori carded a 76 to lead Moanalua to the top seed in the girls' competition. The Menehunes finished with a team score of 164. Aiea and Radford, who closed regulation with scores of 168, went to a sudden-death playoff to determine second place. Na Alii prevailed by one stroke.
The individual championships are set for April 16 and 17. But if the strike claims that tournament as well, the 43 boys and 18 girls with the best regular season scoring averages will qualify for the state tournament in May.
Shooting Star
Ryan Tanoue of St. Louis became the first Hawaii resident to earn a spot on the United States national development team this week with his performance at the National Junior Olympic Riflery Championships.Tanoue, who won the boys air riflery state championship last fall, finished second in both the men's air riflery and smallbore riflery competitions at the event held in Colorado Springs, Colo.
His berth on the development team will give Tanoue the opportunity to shoot for the US team in World Cup matches in Korea and Germany later this year.
Tanoue is set to attend the University of Nevada next fall on a riflery scholarship.
Going to Hana
Keith Morioka is leaving the only school he has ever worked at to become the athletic director at Hana High School in Maui. The current Waipahu High School athletic director decided to fill the vacancy when Greg Belicki left the small school in January.
The principals of both schools will soon meet to determine the timeline of Morioka's switch.
The search for his replacement will start when they agree on the schedule.
After 32 years at Waipahu -- the last 13 as its athletic director -- Morioka admitted his interviewing skills were rusty, but said the challenge of running the Vikings' athletic department enticed him to apply for the job.
"It was kind of exciting to me when I thought about what we could do over there," Morioka said.
