Kalani alumnus Komine wins for Cornhuskers

All-America right-hander Shane Komine of Honolulu struck out 11 and allowed one unearned run, as eighth-ranked Nebraska posted a 7-1 victory over Oklahoma in front of 988 fans at L. Dale Mitchell Field on Friday in Norman, Okla.

Komine, a junior out of Kalani High, scattered four hits and threw his third complete game in his past five starts and the 11th complete game of his career to improve to 7-1 on the season. He retired 21 of 23 Sooners at one point in picking up his seventh consecutive win.

Tong loses opener in judo contest in Rotterdam

Hawaii's Amy Tong lost her opening bout to Germany's Jenny Karl in the 78-kilogram division yesterday in the Rotterdam Grand Prix Judo Championships.

Today, Iolani graduate Taylor Takata will compete in the 60-kilogram class .

Cheer group wins division at national competition

The Hawaii Cheer Company's five-member stunt group, the Flying Hawaiians, finished first Friday in their division at USA Spirit National Championship in Anaheim, Calif.

HCC's Team Haaheo placed second out of 23 teams in the junior division. Team Kulia finished fourth in the senior coed division.

Competition continued through today.

Former senator speaks at Quarterback Club

Mike McCartney, chief executive officer of Hawaii Public Television and a former state senator, will be one of four speakers at the Honolulu Quarterback Club luncheon tomorrow.

Also speaking will be:

>> Shari Smart, University of Hawaii Wahine water polo coach
>> Paula Powell, head coach and coordinator of Keiki Eleu volleyball club, which operates out of the Central YMCA
>> Mark Zeug, executive director of the Aloha State Games

The luncheon, at the Pagoda International Ballroom, is open to the public. Lunch begins at 11:30 a.m., with speakers taking the podium beginning at noon.

Spartans-Vulcans baseball rained out again

For the second day in a row, the Western Athletic Conference baseball game between San Jose State and Hawaii-Hilo was rained out.

Both games will be made up in San Jose, Calif., when the Vulcans travel to the mainland later this month.
