Warriors fall to Bruins
in 4 game rematch

LOS ANGELES >> The University of Hawaii men's volleyball team rode an emotional wave out of Pauley Pavilion on Thursday night after defeating UCLA at home for the first time since 1983.

Last night, the surf was flat for the Warriors, who fell to the Bruins, 30-25, 30-27, 20-30, 30-27, in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation rematch.

"We didn't quite have it tonight,'' said Hawaii coach Mike Wilton, his team falling to 16-4 overall, 11-3 in MPSF. "We played catch-up with them in Games 1 and 2, finally finding some fire in Game 3. We just couldn't sustain it.

"They doubled up on us in blocking and they served tougher than they did the night before. We couldn't sustain the pressure on them with our serving like we did (Thursday).''

UCLA (18-6, 10-4) won the battle at the net, finishing with 18.5 blocks to Hawaii's 9.5.

Costas Theocharidis led the Warriors with a match-high 21 kills. Matt Komer had 15 kills for the Bruins.

Hawaii led early in Game 1 at 9-6 but could not hold on. UCLA caught up with strong blocking from Scott Morrow.

The Bruins surged ahead at 16-13. The Warriors caught up at 21-21 but never took the lead.

In Game 2, Hawaii again took an early 9-6 lead but strong serving by Ian Burnham and Komer swung the momentum back on the Bruins' side of the court.

Hawaii finishes out its road trip tonight with a match at UC Irvine.
