Star-Bulletin"Music in High Places," which debuts April 23 with Alanis Morissette for a weeklong MTV block of programming, takes top-shelf musical talent to perform in natural surroundings at some of the world's most exotic sites. The programs reportedly feature dynamic cinematography, in-depth interviews and numerous "unplugged" acoustic performances by the featured artists.
Each episode took about a week to shoot, said coordinating producer Allen Carr.
The Deftones in February spent 10 days filming on the Big Island.
The group includes Chino Moreno, Abe Cunningham, Chi Cheng, Frank Delgado and Stephen Carpenter.
The Deftones episode will feature "lots of lava" shots, a blessing by a kupuna at the rim of the Kilauea Crater caldera, several "walk and talk" pieces throughout the Big Island, a tour of Kilauea led by a Hawaii Volcanoes National Park Guide, and a lengthy interview with the group at the City of Refuge.
The episode will air the week of April 23 on MTV and on Direct TV's Channel 103 in June, Carr said.
Hawaii was selected as a location by MTV producers and the Deftones because it fit well with the band's tour schedule. Each artist was given three location choices.
Morrisette filmed at the White House ruins of the Navajo Nation in Canyon de Chelly, Ariz. Collective Soul performs in the legendary Casbah of Morocco, Brian McKnight in front of the old slave market of Alcantara in Brazil, Shawn Colvin in the volcanic cones, lagoons and reefs of Motu Tapu, French Polynesia, Mya in Sicily and Sugar Ray in Australia.
MSN will feature at least 12 hours of the series at a new Web site http://musicinhighplaces.msn.com
