Ex-’Bow Blakely
traded to Yankees

Glenallen Hill, a key addition as the New York Yankees won their third straight World Series last year, was traded to the Anaheim Angels yesterday for former UH outfielder Darren Blakely.

Hill's role became superfluous when New York signed free agent outfielder Henry Rodriguez, acquired backup Michael Coleman from Cincinnati and shifted Chuck Knoblauch from second base to left field.

After making the deal, Anaheim released Jose Canseco, in camp with the Angels on a minor league contract but slowed by injuries this spring.

Wahine, Matadors split

Felicity Witt scattered four hits and the University of Hawaii softball team edged host Cal State Northridge 2-1, in the first game of a nonconference doubleheader yesterday.

The Matadors, ranked 25th in last week's poll, shut out the Wahine, 2-0, in the second game.

Leadoff batter Natalie Gonzales led Hawaii, going a combined 4-for-8 in the two games.

The Wahine continue their road trip with a doubleheader today at UC Riverside.

Sea Warriors split pair

The Hawaii Pacific softball team pounded out 13 hits in a 10-1 win over host Sonoma State University to earn a split of a nonconference doubleheader yesterday.

The Cossacks (14-24) won the first game, 3-2, with the game-winning run coming on an error in the bottom of the sixth.

In the five-inning nightcap, Kim Fukumoto went 3-for-3 and Brandy Choy Foo added a two-run triple for HPU (28-6).

Arizona leads golf tourney

Arizona increased its lead to seven strokes over Oklahoma State heading into today's final round of the Dr. Donnis Thompson Invitational women's golf tournament at the Olomana Golf Links.

The Lady Wildcats followed their opening day total of 300 with a 294 to reach the 36-hole mark at 594. Oklahoma State was at 601 and Oklahoma 604.

Host Hawaii is in 14th place in the 18-team tourney with a 650.

In the race for medalist honors, Natalie Gulbis of Arizona and Oklahoma State's Christi Cano are tied at the top at 2-under-par 142.

LeGrande, Williams win

Pro tour players Lee LeGrande and Alika Williams teamed to win Sunday's inaugural Eyecatcher Maui Invitational Beach Volleyball Championship at Kaanapali Beach.

LeGrande and Williams defeated the team of Keoki Schupe and Jason Ring, 15-6, in the men's final. The women's title went to Janice Harrer and Jan Resuello, who defeated Lia Young and Linda Nelson, 15-13.

Scott sails to victory

Michael Scott dominated the Smythe Youth Sailing Elimination Regatta held off Magic Island last Sunday, winning nine-of-10 Laser races.

He advances to the national finals, Aug. 14-19, in San Francisco.

Three runs at Kaneohe

The 8th annual 3D Marines 10-Mile/10-Kilometer Run is scheduled for Saturday, April 21 at Marine Corps Base Hawaii, Kaneohe Bay. A free 1-mile Family Fun Run is also scheduled.
