Jason Scott Lee
shows his head again

ACTOR Jason Scott Lee joined a group of friends, one of whom was celebrating a birthday, at Havana Cabana last Friday night, and they watched the Kamehameha Song Contest on television. Lee, who'd shaven his head to play the King in "The King and I" in London, now has a handsome, full head of hair once again, and he says he's happy to see another Hawaii product has been picked to play his role in London. He's Joe (Keo) Woolford, a St. Louis High alum who won the Brown Bags to Stardom competition as part of a group a few years back. Woolford's casting came as something of a surprise. At least Lee had a successful film career behind him before he landed the original King role in London's revival of the Rodgers & Hammerstein musical opposite Elaine Paige. ...

Horns of plenty

Chicago appears tonight at the Waikiki Shell, and we can hardly wait for nearby neighbors calling to complain of the loud and brassy group. One group going en masse to the show and who won't be bowled over by the brass is the St. John's High School marching band of St. John's Michigan. The band and accompanying entourage purchased a block of 143 tickets for the Shell concert. Another group of Chicago fans are the women of the Harvard girls' basketball team, here for spring break, who are going as a group. The concert gets under way at 7:30 p.m. ...

NEXT week promises to be a big one. For starters, the Star-Bulletin's first Sunday paper comes out on April 1, complete with Parade, the N.Y. Times crossword and a brief historical glimpse of the past 30-plus years in Hawaii ... The Hawaii Theatre is continuing its "Hana Hou!" series April 6 with a new, up-and-coming Hawaiian group yet to be named opening the show ... And Holy Trinity School on April 7 is hosting its first concert ever, "Hawaiian Stars Under the Stars." The nonstop entertainment includes Frank DeLima, Sean Na'auao, Ho'onu'a, Maacho, Hawaii, Big Island's Bruddah Kuz, Gordon Freitas & Local Folk and Cordell. Proceeds benefit Holy Trinity's Scholarship Fund. Call 396-846 for tickets. ...

It takes a Village

HONOREES at the Bernice Pauahi Bishop Awards dinner are Gov. Ben Cayetano and Edwin L. Carter. The Robert J. Pfeiffer medal is going posthumously to Tom Gentry at the April 21 dinner at the Hilton Hawaiian Village Coral Ballroom, a fund-raiser for Bishop Museum. Entertainment will be by Emma Veary, Genoa Keawe, Nina Kealiiwahamana Rapozo and Jeff Apaka. Filmmaker Edgy Lee will present clips from her "Waikiki: In the Wake of Dreams." ... That same night, a second major fund-raiser, this one for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Honolulu, is also being held at the Village. This one will be in the Tapa Ballroom, and presiding over the food will be Sam Choy and a guest brought in for the occasion, chef Masaharu Morimoto of the Food Network's "Iron Chef" show. Lots of luck finding parking. The Village is already moving to have additional parking spaces available across Kalia Road in the Hale Koa Parking Garage.
