Who needs short fences?

Gregg Omori and Patrick Scalabrini both cleared Big Blue last night as the University of Hawaii blasted Centenary, 13-1, in the Rainbow Easter Baseball Tournament opener.

A Rainbow Stadium gathering of 1,190 also saw winning pitcher Chad Giannetti throw seven effective innings as Hawaii (12-16) captured its fourth consecutive victory.

Every Hawaii starter contributed to the Rainbows' 16-hit attack, and every starter except leadoff batter Arthur Guillen scored a run as the Rainbows produced their biggest offensive output and most lopsided win of the season.

Omori, who went 3-for-4 with a walk and two RBIs, hit a first-inning solo homer. He belted a 1-1 offering from losing pitcher Robbie Buhl (0-3) deep over the second fence in left field. It was his team-leading sixth homer of the year.

Omori was on base with a single in the sixth inning when Scalabrini belted another deep homer to left, also over the second fence. Scalabrini's fourth homer of the year highlighted a six-run inning.

Both round-trippers went about 380 feet.

Giannetti allowed eight hits in improving his record to 2-3. He struck out three and walked one. The one run the right-hander allowed was unearned, lowering his ERA from 5.81 to 4.59.

"When you're hitting the ball and pitching like that you tend to win ballgames," Omori said.

Grant Sato pitched the eighth, and J.P. Gauthier, in his UH debut, finished up in the ninth.

Scalabrini had four RBIs and Cortland Wilson added three for the Rainbows.

"We came out here really relaxed," UH acting head coach Carl Furutani said. "When you're relaxed, even when you make mistakes you can make it right."

Said Gents coach Ed McCann: "We're the smallest Division I school in the nation, and we played like it tonight. We didn't come here for a vacation. We're a lot better ballclub than that."

The tournament continues with four games today, concluding with Hawaii against UC Santa Barbara at 6:30 p.m.
