The University of Hawaii water polo team split a pair of matches in Northern California yesterday. The Wahine defeated Santa Clara, 17-6, then lost to San Jose State, 7-6. UH water polo splits
pair of matchesKarin van Hoff scored all three of her goals in the first quarter to help lead the Wahine past Santa Clara. Andy Nishioka and Rebecca Angus also posted hat tricks for Hawaii, while Christi Bardecki added a pair of goals. Kim Yost led Santa Clara with three goals.
The Wahine lost to San Jose State on a goal by Inna Fedoseyeva in the final minute of the match. Hawaii took a 6-5 lead with 1:05 remaining in the fourth quarter on a goal by Bardecki. The Spartans tied the match with 44 seconds left on a goal by Christy Taylor. On Hawaii's next possession, Fedoseyeva stole the ball and raced the length of the pool to score the game-winner. Fedoseyeva led the Spartans with four goals, while Joanne Ansell paced Hawaii with three.
The Wahine are now 13-4 overall, and 1-3 in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation competition. They close their road trip with matches today at UC Santa Cruz and Stanford.
Service for mother of Williams Wednesday
Memorial services for Deborah Williams, mother of former Waipahu baseball star Jerome Williams, are Wednesday at Hawaiian Memorial Park Cemetery in Kaneohe.Viewing is from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., with burial at 1 p.m.
Deborah Williams died March 17 at age 46 after a six-year battle with cancer.
Local teams take titles in beach volleyball tourney
The inaugural Eyecatcher Maui Invitational Beach Volleyball championships featured all-Hawaii finals in both the men's and women's divisions.At Kaanapali Beach, Maui, on Saturday, pros Lee Le Grande and Alika Williams defeated Jason Ring and Keoki Schupe, 15-6, to capture first place.
In the women's division, Janice Harrer and Jan Resuello squeaked by pros Lia Young and Linda Nelson, 15-13.
Players competed for $2,000 in cash and prizes.
