Rough Riders rally
in final inning to win

Joey Shimabuku took one for the team to lift Roosevelt to a 3-2 victory over Moanalua yesterday at Stevenson Intermediate School in the Oahu Interscholastic Association Eastern Division baseball opener for both teams.

Shimabuku was hit by Moanalua relief pitcher Jimmy Strombach with the bases loaded and no outs in the bottom of the seventh inning, allowing Corey Higa to cross the plate with the winning run.

The RBI capped a three-run Roosevelt rally, which erased a 2-0 Moanalua lead entering the final inning.

"It's a good win because it sets the tone for the rest of the season," said Roosevelt coach Kerry Higa. "The team was unified and together, because it was a team win."

The Rough Riders' comeback gave pitcher Chris Mols a complete-game win, and overshadowed a solid performance by Moanalua starter Kyle Nakamichi. Mols, a junior left-hander, struck out five and allowed just three hits in seven innings of work. Nakamichi handcuffed the Rough Riders for six innings, surrendering just a pair of infield singles, before being taken out in the seventh.

Moanalua opened the scoring with two outs in the top of the fourth inning when an error on Rough Riders shortstop Ryan Kotani allowed Neal Manutai to score from second base. The Menehune tacked on another run in the fifth as Tony Reid's double to center field drove in Devin Kitashiro.

Nakamichi was replaced by Mike Miyagi after beaning Jon Higa and walking Kotani to open the bottom of the seventh. Menehunes shortstop Geoffrey Say's throwing error on Corey Higa's grounder allowed Jon Higa to score Roosevelt's first run. Pinch-hitter Booth Kiyota then lined a single to left field to score Kotani with the tying run. Moanalua coach Scott Yamada brought Strombach in to pitch and promptly called for an intentional walk to Blake Isobe to load the bases. Strombach then beaned Shimabuku in the back to bring in the winning run.

"I think it was important to get that first win, and Moanalua is one of the better teams in the league," Kerry Higa said.
