Having established themselves as the best in the state, four Hawaii wrestlers will take on the best from the mainland at the National High School Seniors Wrestling Championships April 6-8 at Newark, Del. States best wrestlers
in national tourneyBy Jason Kaneshiro
Star-BulletinThree-time state champion Travis Lee of St. Louis headlines the group participating in the event on the campus of the University of Delaware. Lee will be accompanied by teammate Troy Takahashi, Grant Nakamura of Baldwin and Pac-Five's Jansen Fukuda.
Lee won state title in the 130-pound weight class last month, while Takahashi won the 119-pound class, Nakamura won the 125-pound class and Fukuda won the 160-pound class.
Wrestlers must rank among the top two in their state to qualify for the tournament, which annually attracts a bevy of college coaches looking for new recruits.
"To be able to wrestle against the top seniors in the nation will be good for them to see where they stand," said St. Louis coach Todd Los Banos, who will accompany the team to Delaware.
No-hitter on Maui
Baldwin opened its run for the Maui Interscholastic League baseball title in impressive fashion last weekend as four Bear pitchers combined to toss a no-hitter in a 14-0 victory over Kaahumanu Hou.The game at Iron Maehara Stadium at Wailuku was shortened to five-innings due to the 10-run rule.
Senior pitchers Jason Miyahira, Tyson Higa, Arthur Christe and Chase Carvalho shared the honors for Baldwin, which faces Seabury Hall Friday and Saturday.
"We have to keep getting better and be ready to play good baseball down the road," said Baldwin coach Kahai Shishido.
The MIL's opening weekend also featured an upset as King Kekaulike knocked off two-time defending state champion Molokai, 11-4. But Shishido knows better than to discount the Farmers, who have struggled with injuries in the preseason. "They'll be pretty tough once they get all those guys back," he said.
On the road again ... and again
The Waialua baseball team will be the road warriors of the Oahu Interscholastic Association this season as the Bulldogs are scheduled to play all of their games on their opponents' turf. The team's nomadic existence is the result of unplayable conditions at Waialua Community Park."We took a look at the field and we decided it was too dangerous for our boys and our opponents," said Waialua athletic director Sharon Yoshimura.
On your marks
