UH faculty union
withdraws complaints to
clear way for strike

Star-Bulletin staff

The University of Hawaii faculty union has withdrawn its complaints against the administration to remove any legal impediment that might block a strike.

Tony Gill, attorney for the University of Hawaii Professional Assembly, said the Hawaii Labor Relations Board had told the UHPA a strike would not be allowed unless the "prohibited practice" complaints, filed in January, were first resolved.

The faculty union decided that withdrawing the complaints March 15 would be more expedient.

At a news conference yesterday, Gill said the complaints about certain administrative procedures remain unresolved but hopefully will be settled by a strike.

The union expects to complete a strike vote on all 10 campuses by today.

The votes will be tallied Friday and released Saturday.
