win streak to 14 gamesThe Sea Warriors, off to their best start in school history, improved to 25-1. The Cougars from Chicago fell to 0-10.
In Game 1, HPU catcher Lauren Okimoto executed a perfect squeeze play in the fourth inning that scored Kristin Fujii with the game's first run. Samee Fernandez's ground-out to first base scored pinch runner Rachel Lacar with what proved to be the game-winner later in the inning.
The Cougars mounted a late rally with a run in the seventh inning, but Malia Sullivan, who improved her record to 11-1 on the year, worked her way out of a jam to end the game.
In the second game, the Sea Warriors won their fourth extra-inning contest of the year when Tascha Berinobis hit a game-winning single to left field in the eighth inning that scored Ashelle Acosta for the win.
Fujii, starting for just the second time in her career, allowed nine hits and two earned runs in eight innings of work. She replaced HPU freshman sensation Jessica Parra, who did not play due to illness.
Fujii helped her own cause with a three-run homer in the bottom of the third. It was her third of the year and ninth of her career, one shy of the school record.
The Sea Warriors host the University of San Diego in a doubleheader tomorrow.
