Brill’s Content takes
look at Bulletin

Brill's Content Senior Writer Seth Mnookin witnessed the Star-Bulletin's independence day firsthand as he interviewed the players for what he says likely will be the July edition of the national magazine, which covers the news industry.

He also had lunch with former Star-Bulletin investigative reporter Ian Lind on Friday.

"I'm just trying to get as many different perspectives as possible. Ian was obviously very visible through his online diary," Mnookin said.

His assignment is to write about the paper's transition to independent ownership and about Bulletin owner David Black, whom he described as "an interesting character a lot of Americans don't know about."

Among the more enjoyable aspects of his assignment in Hawaii was driving out to Hanauma Bay, which is what he was up to when "TheBuzz" caught up with him.

Aloha, y'all, from Atlanta ... where former Hawaii broadcaster Brock Whaley has landed at WSB-FM, a so-called "Hot AC" station. (Star 101.9 FM is Honolulu's hot adult-contemporary station.)

The three call letters stand for "Welcome South, Brother," Whaley said, "or, in my case, 'Welcome South, Brock.'"

Radio insiders will appreciate that WSB is a 50,000-watt, clear-channel station that does not belong to Clear Channel Communications Inc. Rather, it is owned by Atlanta-based Cox Radio Inc., which also owns two AM and three FM stations and operates a fourth on Oahu (KCCN AM 1420/FM 100.3, KRTR AM 1460/FM 96.3, KXME 104.3 FM, KINE 105.1 FM and KGMZ 107.9 FM).

Whaley was in Hawaii for some 17 years. During most of that time, he worked at KPOI FM (97.5). He also did voice-overs for KHNL and KFVE TV.

Most widely known as "B-rock," Whaley left Honolulu and his position as director of programming for the five-station New Wave Broadcasting LP, when his wife, Karen Waygood, accepted a position with CNN in Atlanta. Waygood, formerly of KITV-4 Headline News, is a news writer and copy editor.
