Tai Soo scored 13 points to lead the Kamehameha girls basketball team to a 71-20 season-opening win over Mid-Pacific last night at Damien Gym.Soo, a senior forward, led the Warriors with 6-for-11 shooting as every player who suited up for Kamehameha scored in the ILH opener for both squads. Courtney Chai scored all of her nine points during Kamehameha's 36-point fourth-quarter barrage.
"In the second half, I thought we did a real good job of shooting the ball," said Kamehameha coach Clay Cockett.
After a ragged first half, the Warriors turned up the defensive intensity late in the third quarter to fuel a 23-0 run that extended midway into the fourth period.
"At this point in the season we haven't been playing as well as I thought we should have," Cockett said. "It was nice to get a lot of girls in the game and playing."
Punahou 63, University 28:
Rachel Kane hit for 18 points as the Buffanblu routed the Junior 'Bows.The host Buffanblu used an 18-3 first quarter run to pull away from University. By halftime, Punahou's advantage stretched to 32-11.
Becky Hogue complemented Kane by dropping in eight points for the Buffanblu, while Niki Jones scored seven. Diane Okubo scored 13 points to lead University.
Iolani 54, Maryknoll 38:
Monica Tokoro scored 21 points and Trisha Nishimoto added 16 as the Raiders defeated the Spartans at Iolani.Michelle Baduria scored 12 points to lead Maryknoll.
In ILH Division II action, Hawaii Baptist Academy defeated Punahou, 43-31, Iolani beat St. Andrews, 37-28, and Kamehameha routed Hanalani, 72-25.
