Star-BulletinBefore a crowd of 4,698 at the Stan Sheriff Center last night, the University of Hawaii men's volleyball team defeated Southern Cal, 30-26, 25-30, 30-23, 30-18.
Costas Theocharidis hammered 23 kills and Hawaii overcame a sluggish start to snap a four-match losing streak to SC.
"I'm glad that we woke up,'' said UH coach Mike Wilton. "We just muddled around out there. SC was doing some nice things out there.
"They have some guys who are a handful. But the first two games was just a case of us digging holes for ourselves.''
The Trojans' Brook Billings led all hitters with 27 kills.
Hawaii improved to 14-3 overall, 9-2 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation. SC falls to 10-5 overall and 9-5 in the MPSF.
Following the Game 1 loss, a different Trojan team emerged in Game 2. Behind the hot serving of Donny Killian, SC quickly took a 6-2 lead.
Hawaii closed to 6-5, but the Trojans surged ahead, thanks to five of their eight aces. The Warriors pulled to within 21-19, but five unforced errors and three kills by Billings gave SC the game.
The Warriors were on a mission in Game 3,scoring the first three points. The score was tied 10 times, the last at 20-20.
Dejan Miladinovic was the stone wall for Hawaii, with 2 block solos and 10 block assists. He thwarted several Trojan runs with key blocks to return the service to Hawaii.
In Game 4, Hawaii took a commanding 24-15 lead and never looked back.
Tonight, the Warriors play California at 7 p.m.
