Editor’s Scratchpad

By Richard Halloran

Friday, March 16, 2001

Ordinarily, this newspaper does not publish letters without identifying the writer. An exception appears in the adjacent column because we don't want to embarrass the high school student who wrote it. The letter is a searing condemnation of the teachers who failed to teach the student the rudiments of English composition.

"Governor" is misspelled. "That" should read "who" as it refers to a person. Wellbeing is not one word but should read "well-being." "Believe" is misspelled. In the next sentence, to whom the second "they" refers is not clear. "Believe" is again misspelled. "Our state has the lowest paid teachers in the nation" is offered without supporting facts. The reference to "limited supplies" is unclear. "Where there is less time for students who don't understand the lessons taught" is muddled.

The public school teachers are insisting that they deserve a pay raise. When they produce students who write as badly as this one, the teachers hurt their own cause.
