Keeping Score
I'M not a morning person. But to our new readers who are, welcome. And to our loyal afternoon subscribers whose continued support brought us to this day, mahalo. Aloha, readers
A new betouch of the old combined
with a splash of something newToday, the Star-Bulletin introduces a few new bylines in its sports section and reintroduces some familiar names. It's a dynamic team that promises to continue the tradition of excellence of the past 119 years.
So to the lineup:
The hottest team in town is not in town this week. The Rainbow men's basketball team is in Dayton, Ohio, and so is our reporter Dave Reardon (Pearl City High School).
Also covering a team in the postseason this week is Al Chase, whose soccer column "Just for Kicks'' runs Wednesdays. He continues his coverage of the UH women's basketball team tonight in the WNIT.
Paul Arnett continues his coverage of the Warrior football spring training. Arnett, our nationally respected football writer, was the UNLV basketball beat writer through their championship season in 1990.
Joining our staff this week are Kalani Simpson, Jason Kaneshiro and Grace Wen.
Simpson (Lahainaluna) is one of our columnists. His "Sidelines'' debuts tomorrow.
Kaneshiro (Roosevelt) is in charge of our prep coverage.
Wen, from Los Angeles, debuts with her preview of the University of Hawaii-USC volleyball match.
The sports desk includes assistant sports editor-A.M. Randy Cadiente (Farrington) and assistant sports editor-P.M. Sjarif Goldstein (Pearl City). Our sports copy editors include former Garden Island sports editor Nick Abramo; Ben Henry (Damien); and Tim Crouse, who was our lead high school writer this past year.
Over the next few weeks, we will debut new features and continue old favorites.
We're looking forward to adding a Sunday paper on April 1 and expanding our college, high school and recreation coverage. Our reader feedback section -- "FanFare'' -- is a page devoted to letters, e-mails and fan polls.
Whatever changes we make, one thing will remain the same: our commitment to bring you more than just the scores. We will continue to tell you the stories of the people behind the wins and losses.
As always, we want to hear from you -- and not just reporting the scores. Let us know about an athlete or team deserving of attention. We welcome your opinions. Tell us how to serve you better.

Until tomorrow ...
