Our apologies There were delivery problems with the new Star-Bulletin yesterday, and subscribers who tried to call about it were unable to get through.
Many did not get the new
Star-Bulletin's first edition
Star-BulletinWe apologize. Our phone lines were jammed with calls from new customers calling to subscribe to the paper. The response has been overwhelming. The phone system just could not handle the volume of calls.
Verizon Hawaii, which provides our telephone service, has been called in to help solve the overload with more lines. The good news: We're expanding our subscribers.
The bad news, of course, is that not everyone got the evening paper.
The new Star-Bulletin began printing for the first time yesterday on a combination of presses - some which are tried and true at RFD Publications (MidWeek), and others that just arrived from Australia. The additional presses were put on line and installation was not complete until Wednesday night, so there was no time for testing and dry runs.
Our first morning edition yesterday was the first full run of the new press system. And although we are delighted with the quality of the printing, the presses are "having teething problems," as one Oahu Publications executive said.
Response to this first edition has been tremendous. We were unable to keep news boxes full.
But we certainly did not want our longtime subscribers inconvenienced. To our faithful readers, we are sorry if you got your paper late or not at all. We promise to do better tomorrow and the day after that, and onward.
While the Star-Bulletin is part of the fabric of Hawaii life, the new printing and distribution system is fledgling and getting its kinks out.
Bear with us. You won't be sorry. We promise.
