Alan Naluai,
Surfers’ singer,
dies at home at 61

Associated Press

HONOLULU >> Alan Naluai, a member of the Surfers singing group, died of a heart attack Saturday at his Hawaii Kai home. He was 62.

The trio, which included his brother, Clayton, formed and began recording in the late 1950s. They shared the stage with singer Don Ho at Duke Kahanamoku's in the 1970s and at the Hilton Hawaiian Village Dome in the 1980s.

Alan provided the group's comic relief, while Clayton was the romantic, leading man. Though retired, the brothers periodically worked as a duo, the last time aboard the cruise ship Independence in December and January.

Clayton Naluai said his brother was completing a solo vocal album of Hawaiian tunes, including some of his original compositions, at the time of his death.

Alan Nalaui also worked in real estate and as a Budget Rent a Car salesman.

Survivors include his wife, Faith, six children, mother Abigail, three brothers, two sisters and 11 grandchildren.

Some of the new music will be performed at the funeral at 6 p.m. Sunday at Kawaiahao Church. The ashes will be scattered Monday off Waikiki.
