Editors Scratchpad
This page and the one opposite called Commentary, also known as the op-ed, will present a flow of editorials, letters, and columns that will be stimulating, often provocative and sometimes infuriating. Aloha, readers
Stimulating, provocative, infuriating
Over the course of a week, there will be something for everyone as these pages carry a mixture of thought from conservative, middle-road and liberal writers; from local, national and international analysts; from men and women; and from commentators in every ethnic community in this most diverse state in the union.
The forum for letters and op-ed articles is open to anyone who has something pertinent to say and who is prepared to argue his or her case cogently. Writers should seek to balance candor and civility as it is a mark of Hawaii and America that women and men of good will can contend with one another vigorously and still remain within the bounds of good manners.

An ancient maxim of uncertain origin holds that "it is better to light one candle than to curse the dark." To light one candle
In this space, the writers and editors of the Star-Bulletin will report on seemingly minor incidents that in reality illuminate, for better or worse, the lives of the people of Hawaii. Some will be reason for applause: a plea for organ donors from one who has benefited from a heart transplant. Others will be critical but will suggest a change for the better: knocking cops who stand around a fender-bender on the highway instead of motioning the rubberneckers to move on.
These will be signed articles reflecting the experience and viewpoint of the writer, not the editorial stance of the newspaper. In each case, these few words will be intended to light one candle for all of us.
