Back in the Day

THREE YEARS AGO THIS WEEK

Bullet Junior first baseman Chad Santos homered and knocked in two runs as St. Louis beat Mid-Pacific, 8-5, in the ILH opener. MPI, however, won the regular-season title.

Santos was drafted by the Kansas City Royals in the 22nd round in 1999 and spent last season in Single A (Northwest League).

TWENTY-EIGHT YEARS AGO THIS WEEK

Bullet Senior righthander Gerald Ako of Aiea pitched a seven-inning no-hitter against Waialua to improve to 4-0, with a 0.53 ERA and 34 strikeouts in 34 innings.

Ako was named the OIA West MVP after an 8-0 campaign, then earned a win and save in the state tournament as Na Alii won the championship.

Ako went on to star at the University of Hawaii -- and was drafted by the Royals in the eighth round in 1977.
