Star-BulletinTheocharidis received the honor because he averaged 6.2 kills, 0.78 blocks, 1.89 digs and 0.22 aces in two wins against No. 3 Pepperdine last weekend at the Stan Sheriff Center.
He had a total of 56 kills (career-high 34 on Friday) on 112 attempts for a .321 attack percentage in the matches.
Theocharidis, who's bounced back from a shoulder ailment and food poisoning this season, said he now feels about 100 percent.
"If not, I'm close to it," he said.
"I just have to hope I stay healthy now and my teammates stay healthy."
Moving up
The AVCA poll comes out today and Hawaii can expect to move up from No. 5 after extending its win streak against top 10 teams to four with the sweep of No. 3 Pepperdine."I do my duty to vote, but I don't get too excited for us," said Hawaii head coach Mike Wilton, noting he's more concerned with Friday's match against No. 4 USC.
"But obviously we should move up a little bit," he added.
Meanwhile, Volleyball Magazine has moved the Warriors (13-3, 8-2 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation) from No. 6 to No. 2 in its poll.
Tough schedule next year
This year's eight-match conference road schedule may be challenging for the Warriors but next year's will be even more daunting.Hawaii will have to play 10 conference matches on the road because of a double round-robin schedule format.
"We just have to get used to the fact we're going to have a difficult road schedule," said Wilton.
But he said he'll try to avoid another four-night, four-match marathon like the one the Warriors face at UC Irvine and UCLA between March 28 and March 31.
"I really tried to break that up with a gap but neither team would play us sooner than Wednesday (March 28)," said Wilton. "I'm going to make every effort not to play more than three times on a road trip because that's more than enough."
Wong strong
Despite his team's losses, Punahou product Scott Wong had 41 kills over the weekend for Pepperdine. And head coach Marv Dunphy said he's never unhappy with the senior All-American's effort."He's carried as big a load as anybody I've coached at any level, and he's carried it with class," said Dunphy. "It's going to be a sad day when he moves on. I would never be disappointed in Scotty Wong. He has the heart of a champion."
