A junior on the University of Hawaii golf team, Asao had a 36-hole total of 140. Finishing second at 144 after a 1-over 73 is veteran Paul Kimura, while Russell Nygard, another UH golfer, is next at 146.

Forty golfers made the cut of 155, including former champion Brandan Kop, who was in a four-way tie for 10th at 150.

The final round is scheduled for tomorrow, starting at 11:05 a.m.

Three water polo wins

Freshman Chelsea Garner-Prohs scored six goals to lead the No. 8 UH women's water polo team to an 8-0 victory over host UC Irvine in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match at Irvine, Calif.

After their win, the Wahine went to Redlands, Calif., for two matches in the Redlands Tournament. Hawaii defeated Villanova, 17-0, then topped the host Bulldogs, 8-6.

Hawaii (10-0) is off to its best-ever start. The Wahine face second-ranked UCLA today.

QB Club speakers

Skippa Diaz, the former Farrington High School head football coach who is now a City and County Parks and Recreation deputy, will be one of three speakers at the Honolulu Quarterback Club's luncheon on Monday.

Joining Diaz at the Pagoda Hotel are Punahou swim coach Kenny Chew and UH associate head football coach George Lumpkin.

Lunch begins at 11:30 a.m. with the program set for noon.

Also, the club will honor its female and male sportspersons of the month for February.

Selected were Crystal Lee, a senior forward for the UH women's basketball team, and St. Louis School wrestler Travis Lee.

Crystal Lee was twice named Western Athletic Conference Player of the Week during February.

Travis Lee won his fourth straight Interscholastic League of Honolulu wrestling title for the Crusaders.

Wahine split in softball

Former Punahou standout Estee Okumura homered to help lead the University of the Pacific to a 2-0 win over the UH in a Malihini Tournament game at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium yesterday.

The Wahine (16-7) came back to shut out Western Illinois, 8-0. Senior Desiree Duran ran her record to 4-2, holding the Westerwinds to one hit while striking out five.

The tournament continues through tomorrow.

Special Olympians medal

Hawaii's Phillip Benjamin and Brandy Cruz both won bronze medals in speed skating Thursday at the Special Olympics World Games in Anchorage, Alaska.

Competition continued through today. The two return Monday at 1:15 p.m. on Hawaiian Airlines.
