Honolulu Fest kicks off

The Akita City Kantokai from Japan balances huge lantern
displays, with candles inside each lantern, on various parts of
their bodies yesterday. It was part of the opening ceremony
of the 7th Annual Honolulu Festival,
"Pacific Harmony," at Honolulu Hale.

The Wamiles Odoriko Bishogyo dancers from Japan perform
at the ceremony. Festival events continue today and tomorrow
at the Hawaii Convention Center, ending with a parade at 5 p.m.
tomorrow down Kalakaua Avenue, culminating in a grand finale
at Kapiolani Park that includes artists, performers,
Japanese and local food, and fireworks.



No Fear In
Year of the Snake

Thanh Vo, on a field trip yesterday with Aliiolani School, has no
fear as he entrusts his neck to a 356-foot-long snake at the Hawaii
Convention Center. The snake will be carried in the Honolulu
Festival's parade tomorrow by the Oigami Onsen
Hebi Mikoshi group from Japan.
