Athletes of
the WeekTravis Lee He won his third state title decisively -- with pins in the first three rounds and a dominating victory in the 130-pound title match -- helping the Crusaders win the team trophy.
ST. LOUIS WRESTLING
Stephany Lee Competing at 140 pounds, she won all four of her state tournament matches with pins, scoring 30 points for the Menehunes -- the highest point total possible for an individual wrestler.
MOANALUA WRESTLING
Here are some of last week's other outstanding performers in Hawaii high school sports: Honor Roll
BASKETBALL
Aritta Lane, Aiea: Averaged 16 points and seven rebounds in three Imua Challenge games, scoring 16 points in a win over Kamehameha.Noelle Russell, Kamehameha: Scored 23 points against Moanalua in the Imua Challenge.
Ashley Takata, Kalani: The junior guard was named MVP of the Kalani Tournament and helped the Falcons to three straight wins.
GOLF
Christian Akau, Kamehameha: Scored a 4-under 66 during team competition at the Ala Wai Golf Course.Chase Chulakote, Kailua: Shot a low-round score of 1-over 73 in Oahu Interscholastic Association East Division team competition at Makaha Golf Club.
Jenna Seki, Punahou: Fired a 70 for par -- seven strokes better than the nearest competitor -- to help the Buffanblu to the lowest team score, at the Ala Wai.
WRESTLING
Prince Brown, St. Louis: Held on in the final seconds of double OT for a 7-6 win in the 215-pound final during the state tournament.Jansen Fukuda, Mid-Pacific: Up eight pounds from 2000 season, Fukuda won a second straight state title.
Ashley Gaspar, Nanakuli: Defended her state championship at 155 pounds with a pin.
Saia Lotulelei, Maui: Became a three-time champion with a pin in the final of 275-pound weight class.
Gabrielle Nicholas, Moanalua: Was the only unseeded girl to win a state title, securing the 175-pound crown with a takedown in the final minute.
Kesa Tong-Ishikawa, Castle: Won a qualifying match (130 pounds), then less than an hour later upset the Interscholastic League of Honolulu's top seed in the final seconds of the match.
OIA, ILH TIED
The OIA and ILH have each won three state championships so far in 2001, with the Maui Interscholastic League capturing the other two.The titles for the OIA have come in boys' soccer (Mililani), boys' basketball (Kalaheo) and girls' wrestling (Moanalua).
All three ILH crowns have come in the past two weeks -- in swimming (Punahou, boys and girls) and wrestling (St. Louis).
The Baldwin softball and girls' soccer squads won the first two state championships of the year on back-to-back weekends in February.
Last year at this point, the ILH had four titles, the MIL two and the OIA and Big Island Interscholastic Federation one each.
The only repeat titles so far this year came from Baldwin in girls' soccer, Punahou in girls' swimming and Moanalua in girls' wrestling.
Eight more state championships are up for grabs this spring and nine more will be decided in the fall.
TWENTY-NINE YEARS AGO THIS WEEK
Kailua defeated St. Louis, 65-44, to win its first boys' basketball championship.Senior Pete Smith poured in 18 points after halftime and tallied 25 for the game to lead the Surfriders. He also collected 14 rebounds.
Smith also led the way for Kailua in a 75-61 upset of Punahou in the semifinals, with a 22-point effort.
The leading scorer that night for the Buffanblu was sophomore Mosi Tatupu -- who went on to star in the NFL for the New England Patriots.
