Scrimmage set
for Saturday

University of Hawaii associate head coach George Lumpkin has yet to determine how many plays the teams will run in this Saturday's scrimmage.

"We're going to meet on that today," Lumpkin said after this morning's workout on the grass fields. "We figure we'll go an hour with our regular drills, then spend the last hour with the scrimmage. We'll know more tomorrow."

UH quarterback Tim Chang said he wasn't sure how many repetitions he would get under center. He figured he would run with the first unit.

"Scrimmages are always kind of fun," Chang said. "It lets you know where you're at offensively and defensively. So far, I feel like the practices are going pretty well."

Last year, Hawaii conducted only one scrimmage. This season, Lumpkin said they are scheduled to have two in addition to the spring game.

One reason for the extra scrimmage is to allow the defense the feel of full contact. UH defensive coordinator Kevin Lempa believes one cause for all the missed tackles last year was lack of live contact in the regular practices.

"It makes a difference if you tackle in practices," Lempa said. "We're not going to make that big of an adjustment. We're not going to hit on every play. But the extra scrimmage allows us to see how the guys we have moved to different positions react to a game-like atmosphere."

Jones report

Despite being listed in satisfactory condition and being removed from the Intensive Care Unit, head coach June Jones' family has asked the public not to come to the hospital to see him.

In a letter sent to the Star-Bulletin yesterday, Jones' family said they were overwhelmed by the warmth and love his fans have poured out to him during this difficult time.

His physicians say the next stage for Jones' recovery is critical and rest is the main prescription. He will remain in the hospital for several more weeks.

Nearly two weeks ago, Jones was involved in a one-car accident on the H-1 freeway. He nearly died and according to his doctors, has made a remarkable recovery.

Jones underwent surgery on Monday to repair a fractured elbow. He should be back at full speed come fall camp.

Injury update

Mike Iosua rolled up on his left ankle during this morning's workout, forcing him to the sidelines.

The defensive tackle, who missed most of last year with a right ankle and shoulder problems, said he hoped to be back at spring practice tomorrow.

Lempa said Iosua's injuries last year were the most critical to the team. This mishap doesn't appear to be that serious.

"It's just a little sore," Iosua said. "I just didn't want to take any chances of getting it hurt worse."

Iosua left the field under his own power, although he did limp all the way to the UH locker room.

Better news awaited wideout Tafiti Uso, who said he hopes to return from a shoulder sprain as early as this Saturday. He said it remained sore, but not enough to keep him out for all of the spring workouts.

A member of the UH medical staff said Uso could practice if he wanted. He was no longer undergoing treatment. Everyone else is fit for duty.

Spring game tickets on sale

The annual Green-White intrasquad scrimmage, scheduled for Sunday, March 25, has been renamed the "Warrior Spring Challenge.''

Only 3,000 tickets are available for the event, which begins at 4:30 p.m. with pregame activities at Cooke Field. The scrimmage is set for 5:30 p.m., followed by a postgame concert with Kahi'au and Sean Na'au'ao.

Presale tickets are $7 for adults, $6 for Na Koa members and $5 for students through high school. UH students are admitted free. Tickets will cost $1 more on game day.

Tickets are available at the Stan Sheriff Center box office.

Among the other events are quarterback challenges featuring former UH players and selected fans, and a pizza-eating contest involving UH coaches, players and media.
