PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. -- Robin Ventura went 3-for-3 with four RBIs, hitting a three-run homer yesterday to lead the New York Mets over the Florida Marlins, 13-1.

Benny Agbayani and Mark Johnson also homered for the Mets, who had 14 hits.

Marlins starter Jesus Sanchez was tagged for seven runs, five hits and five walks in 1 innings.

New York went ahead 5-0 in the first on Agbayani's leadoff homer and Ventura's shot over the light tower in right, a drive estimated at 470 feet.

Johnson's two-run homer in the eighth was even longer, a drive over the scoreboard in right-center that made it 12-1.

Kevin Appier allowed a run in the fourth on Preston Wilson's double and Charles Johnson's RBI single.

Mets starter Al Leiter allowed one hit in three innings, struck out three and walked none.

Witt leads UH
sweep in softball

Freshman Felicity Witt pitched a five-hitter in the first game and also won the nightcap in relief as the University of Hawaii softball team opened its Western Athletic Conference season with a 6-1, 4-3 sweep of Loyola Marymount last night at the UH stadium.

Witt, who struck out six in the opener, fanned five more while finishing the second game with two hitless innings. The Wahine scored the winning run in the seventh on singles by April Crowell and Kate Judd and a two-out error by LMU second baseman Laura Eckley.

Crowell homered in the first game and Judd had three of UH's 12 hits in the second game.

Yokomoto-Lee victorious

Beau Yokomoto and Regan Lee teamed to shoot a best-ball 65 yesterday and win the Pro Link/Wilson Pro-Pro Championship at the Ko Olina Golf Club with a 36-hole total of 133.

They won the Aloha Section PGA event by one stroke over the Hilo Municipal team of Kevin Hayashi and Lance Taketa, and the Makena Resort twosome of Brian Sasada and Kirk Nelson.

The winners birdied all four of the par-5s, with Lee posting 4s at the first, 13th and 14th holes. But the birdie at 13 was actually disappointing for Lee, as he missed a four-foot eagle putt. Yokomoto's birdie came at the fifth hole, where he two-putted from 10 feet.

The victory was worth $1,500 apiece.

Wahine remain in 14th

The UH women's golf team remained in 14th place going into today's final round of the Spartan Invitational at Salinas, Calif.

The Wahine shot a team 656. Arizona State led the tournament at 577.

ASU's Jimin Kang was the individual leader with a 5 under 139. The top Hawaii golfer was Melanie Matsumura, whose 158 put her in a tie for 49th.

Cowgill named all-region

Chaminade senior guard CJ Cowgill was named to the NCAA Division II All-West Region second team yesterday.

Cowgill averaged 20.5 points while leading the Silverswords to a 16-11 record, their best since the 1986-87 season. Cowgill is ranked No. 1 nationally in free-throw percentage (95 percent), and sank a school-record 35 straight during this season.

He was the only selection from among the four Hawaii Pacific West Conference schools.
