Ala Wai Golf Course
bribery case now with
prosecutor’s office

Question: Whatever happened to the two Ala Wai Golf Course employees arrested last year in connection with a suspected bribery scheme for tee times?

Answer: Police sent the case to the city prosecutor's office Feb. 22, where it will be reviewed, according to police Lt. Bill Kato.

After an eight-month investigation, a female course operations assistant and a male clerk were arrested in June for allegedly taking thousands of dollars in bribes to schedule tee times.

The woman had worked at the Ala Wai Golf Course for 22 years, while the man had worked there for three years.

As city employees, the starters face a Class C felony charge, which could mean up to five years in prison and a $10,000 fine.

A case involving employees of Verizon Hawaii (formerly GTE Hawaiian Tel) who allegedly tampered with the city's phone system to secure tee times for themselves and friends at several municipal golf courses was also sent to the prosecutor's office the same week.

In that case, a 53-year-old Mililani Mauka man and a 60-year-old Mililani man were arrested at Verizon's Bishop Street offices in October. Verizon suspended the employees after the arrests.

Police allege that the men violated wiretapping laws, a Class C felony.

The two had tampered with the system at least 20 times to get tee times at municipal courses, including Ewa Villages, Pali, Ala Wai and West Loch.

Golf course starters became suspicious when the men were getting tee times for the same days and times, Kato said.

Police continue their investigation at Pali Golf Course, where a video camera revealed employee theft. A 66-year-old McCully man is accused of stealing at least $300. The starter was booked for second-degree theft on June 27, but was released pending further investigation.
