Calling all leprechauns bearing shamrocks and seeking beer: Irish Fry Saturday
raises funds to
fight cancerMurphy's Bar & Grill hosts its fourth Irish Fry, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, to raise funds for Coaches vs. Cancer.
The menu includes Irish bacon, bangers, black-and-white pudding, Gaelic fried tomatoes, scrambled eggs, Mrs. Murphy's soda bread and corned beef hash. Plus, a pint of Guinness or Harp and a Bailey's Irish Coffee.
The band Irish Hearts will perform and door prizes will include a quilt -- called "Crazy About Shamrocks" -- made by Marion Murphy of material gathered by the Murphys for St. Patrick's Days past.
Cost is $20. Free parking will be available at Bank of Hawaii, across from Murphy's at Nuuanu and Merchant streets. Call 531-0422.
Coaches Against Cancer is a national fund-raising partnership of the American Cancer Society and college basketball coaches, inspired by former North Carolina State coach Jim Valvano, who died of cancer in 1993.
The Hawaii effort is spearheaded by Riley Wallace, coach of the University of Hawaii-Manoa men's basketball team; and Vince Goo, coach of the UH wahine. Last year they raised $127,000, the second highest amount among 400 schools nationwide.
Funds raised support cancer research, education and patient services.

March wine tastings
Wine-and-food receptions at Sam Choy's Diamond Head continue at 5 p.m. Fridays in March:Friday: "The Great Pacific Northwest" features wines from a region growing in influence, paired with a St. Patrick's Day menu.
March 16: Wines from Chateau St. Michelle are paired with a seafood appetizer menu including smoked salmon and pea shoot salad and seared fish with vegetable stew.
March 23: Features wines with seafood dishes for Lent, including chile-glazed mussels and pot pie.
March 30: In a departure from wine, infused martinis will be served along with party pupus.

Dinner affair
Spring Beer Dinner: Beers from Pyramid Brewery will be paired with a five-course menu, 6:30 p.m. March 15 at the Parc Cafe. Chef Don Maruyama's menu includes Char Sui Duck and Chinese Sausage Gumbo, Peanut-Crusted Island Shrimp and Hoisin Lamb Chops. He and a Pyramid representative will explain the pairings with the brewery's range of ales, including Hefeweisen, Apricot Ale and Weisen Berry. Cost is $42.Call 931-6643.

Manapua making: Titus Chan demonstrates a way of preparing the manapua adapted to the American kitchen, 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Lyon Arboretum. Cost is $22 and enrollment is limited. Call 988-0456.
Getting to heart of well-being
Dr. Paul Pearsall author of 10 best-selling books, will present a talk and workshop based on his book, "The Heart's Code," at 1 p.m. Sunday at The Queen's Medical Center's Kamehameha Auditorium.Pearsall examines the idea that the heart, not the brain, holds the secrets that link mind, body and spirit.
To attend, guests must register by Friday. The cost of the talk/workshop is $15. Admission will be free to those with The Queen's Heart Institute's Ka Na 'au Ho'ala (Healing Heart) coupon book.
