Remodeling of Queen's Hospital in 1959.
Here we are back at The Queen's Medical Center. Their latest round of construction is almost done, including the emergency room, where shocked and saddened citizens gathered recently to maintain a tearful vigil over Hawaii's most-important public servant as he gamely fought his way back from injuries sustained in a car accident. Coral-block wall
gone, not forgottenThe new pink-beige parking structure is almost pau, and features the stucco-and-hanging-gardens aesthetic that symbolizes "local" architecture in the 1990s. If only public housing looked as nice!
If it's hard to get a grip on The Queen's, it's because the original solitary structure has mutated over the years and has been consumed by itself. Here's a picture of The Queens under destruction/construction in 1959, as yet another wing is being tacked on. There's still a little bit of this facade visible.
We're back at The Queens because a couple of weeks ago our international cadre of WatDat specialists were flummoxed over the age of a coral-block wall along Punchbowl Street that was torn down during this phase of construction. The State Historic Preservation Division guessed that the wall dated to the 1960s, but were unable to prove its age or significance. It was just another familiar Honolulu landmark that vanished overnight.
Since then, we've gotten a number of notes saying the wall was older than believed. One guy even said he made a point of walking on top of it while hiking to school in the late '30s.
But elements of the wall may reappear. According to spokesfolks from The Queen's, the cut-coral blocks from the demolished wall were saved and will be recycled into a future construction project.
