The San Jose State Spartans broke open a close game with a four-run, fifth inning en route to a 8-4 Western Athletic Conference win at Municipal Stadium.
UH starter Sean Yamashita and SJSU's Tim Adinolfi were in control early. The Spartans led 1-0 going into the bottom of the fifth.
The inning started innocently, as Yamashita fanned Ryan Adams.
But he then hit John Fagan. Singles by Kevin Frandsen and Adam Shorsher loaded the bases.
Yamashita got the second out when lead-off hitter Gabe Lopez popped up, but Ryan Brucker and Junior Ruiz followed with two-run singles.
"Sean pitched well, had good stuff, but left a couple of balls up," Rainbows acting head coach Carl Furutani said.
Adams' two-run homer and Shorsher's RBI double accounted for the Spartans' three runs in the sixth inning.
Meanwhile, Adinolfi, a 6-foot-4 senior left-hander, held the 'Bows to five hits and struck out eight through six innings.
"You've got to give Adinolfi credit. He did a good job. The umpire was good, consistent, called low strikes and the outside corner. It was a good matchup," Furutani said.
Freshman right fielder Tim Montgomery opened the seventh inning by hitting his first home run for the Rainbows.
Lane Nogawa and Derek Honma, who was 3-for-4, singled. After Adinolfi recorded his ninth strikeout (Matt Purtell), Patrick Scalabrini homered over the left-field wall to conclude the UH scoring.
"For us, it's frustrating. I'd be lying if I didn't tell you that," Furutani said. "I told the team we're happy with their effort, happy with their heart, no question about that.
"But the part we're not happy with is the mental part of the game. When you go through a streak like this, you press and try to do things you shouldn't.
"Some of them are going up to the plate with hesitation. They have to trust in themselves."
It was the sixth consecutive WAC defeat for the Rainbows.
UH ends the San Jose State series and the road trip with a single game today.
