Fanning cross-cultural
inspiration

Works by 22 local artists will be featured in "East is West in Hawaii," an exhibition of contemporary art inspired by the Honolulu Academy of Arts' Asian and Western collections.

Pieces will include paintings, works on paper, ceramics, mixed media and installations reflecting cross-cultural themes, by such artists as Hanae Uechi Mills, Hiroki Morinoue, Masami Teraoka, Sanit Khewhok, Laura Ruby and Esther Shimazu.

Teraoka will talk about his career and most recent work at 2 p.m. March 18 in the Academy Theatre. Admission is $5 general, $3 for members and students with valid I.D. Tickets are on sale at the academy.

The show will be in the Second Floor Galleries through April 15.

Maui writer to
receive Hay Award

Pulitzer Prize winning Maui poet, author and translator W.S. Merwin will receive this year's John Hay Award tomorrow as part of a colloquium, "The Remains of a Rainbow," being held in his honor at the Hotel Hana-Maui.

The John Hay Award is presented by The Orion Society, a Massachusetts-based national environmental education organization that publishes the literary journal Orion Magazine. The award is given each year to a writer who has made a significant contribution to nature literature as well as to the areas of conservation and education.

Past recipients include Ann Zwinger, Homer Aridjis, E.O. Wilson, Gary Snyder, Jane Goodall and Peter Mathiesson.

Merwin, who has lived in Hawaii since 1975, has written more than 20 volumes of poetry and prose and has translated an equal number of volumes. His honors include the Kenyon Review, Guggenheim and Academy of Poets fellowships; the Bollingen Prize in Poetry; the Hawaii Governor's Award for Literature; and the PEN Translation Prize.
