Kamehameha and Castle thought they had won league championships in girls' wrestling, but after further review, both teams will have to share their trophies. Wrestling recount
changes resultsFinal standings were revised after the completion of the Interscholastic League of Honolulu and Oahu Interscholastic Association girls' wrestling tournaments this past weekend after scoring errors were reported.
Kamehameha and Pac-Five each scored 95 points for a share of the ILH trophy. Punahou was third (89) and Iolani was fourth (14). This was the first year the league had a team championship for girls. In previous years, the ILH girls had only individual championships.
Moanalua and Castle are co-champions in the OIA, with each team receiving 132 points. Kahuku (83), Leilehua (77) and McKinley (67) rounded out the top five.
Girls basketball tourney today
The Kalaheo Lady Mustangs/FILA Basketball Classic tips off today at 3:30 p.m., with Kalaheo taking on Mid-Pacific. The Mustangs and Owls are just two of the five participating teams that made the state tournament last year. Two more of those teams match up at 8 tonight -- Punahou and Nanakuli. Honokaa is the other team returning from the state tournament last year. Rounding out the field is Maryknoll, McKinley, Roosevelt, Baldwin and Millikan (Calif.).The tournament at Kalaheo Gym runs through Saturday.
More preseason hoops:
The FILA Lady Tiger Challenge, which features Oahu teams against neighbor island teams, is set for March 8-10 at McKinley Gym. Oahu has won the tournament seven of the last eight years. The field includes Punahou, University, Kalaheo, McKinley, Waiakea, Kapaa and Kealakehe.
Borreca dominates state swimming tourney
"It's not something that happens often. It was pretty incredible."That was Punahou coach Kenny Chew's reaction to Nick Borreca's record-breaking performance at the state swimming championships on Saturday.
Borreca was involved in four state record-breaking swims -- two individual and two as part of relay teams.
"I thought he had a chance (for four records), but actually going out and doing it is a different story," Chew said.
No other swimmer holds more than two boys state records.
Chew said the times that Borreca turned in are All-American-level and that the national high school All-American team will be finalized in a couple months.
Chew said Borreca, a senior, is looking at several Division I colleges but hasn't made up his mind where to go yet.
