Star-BulletinThe shootings occurred after an argument between a brother and sister in the home of their grandparents, Yoshio and Sally Kato.
Yoshio, 82; his wife Sally, 75, and their granddaughter Carrie Pattison-Adric, 32, of Haleiwa, were killed. Pattison-Adric's 21-year-old brother, Dante, has been charged with three counts of murder.
"I couldn't believe it," Pattison-Adric's husband, Hanalei, said this morning, his voice breaking. He said he received a call from Carrie's mother Sunday about the shooting.
His wife was visiting her grandparents, who had moved to Las Vegas three years ago. He said he's known her for 20 years -- since they attended Waialua High School. They have two other children.
"She gave whatever she had to me and the kids," he said. "Every moment is so precious. You don't know it until it's gone."
Sergeant Rocky Alby of the Las Vegas police's homicide division said the killings occurred around 10:45 p.m. at 1516 Valley Crest St., in a neighborhood a few miles northwest of downtown Las Vegas.
Prior to the gunshots, the brother and sister argued, Alby said. Carrie's aunt, Grace, said she heard shots when she was using the computer in the living room.
Alby said a rifle was used in the shootings. Dante Pattison lived at his grandparent's home.
The motive is unknown, Alby said. He said Pattison has not given a statement to police.
Neighbor William LaFontaine, who lives two houses away, said, "It was tragic. They were very nice people."
