Moore's 'Moonglow' to premiere on TV

The Hawaii film "Moonglow," starring Milo O'Shea, Joanna Cassidy, Ione Skye, Eileen Brennan, and KHON anchor Joe Moore will have its world television premiere tomorrow on Oceanic Cable's I-Control/Video on Demand channel.

"Moonglow" is the first independent film to run on Oceanic's Video on Demand Channel, a service for digital subscribers that features first-run blockbusters and classic films, according to Norman Santos, Oceanic vice president of operations. The Video on Demand channel allows digital viewers to call up films at any time, day or night, with the option to pause, fast forward, slow or reverse the film.

Moore is executive producer of "Moonglow," which is directed by Dennis Christianson. The film's theatrical premiere was last year in Honolulu. Before the film starts, Moore talks about how it was made.

Ruptured gas line closes Waipahu roads

A backhoe struck a 2-inch pipe carrying synthetic natural gas at the intersection of Lumiaina and Lumiauau streets in Waipahu yesterday morning.

Steve Golden, Gas Company spokesman, said that a contractor operating a backhoe accidentally hit the gas line.

The Honolulu Fire Department contacted the Gas Co. around 10 a.m. Crew members from the company arrived and stopped the gas leak by 11:30. The repair was completed at 12:15 p.m. During the repair, roads were closed for about an hour and a half. There were no evacuations.

Alzheimer's Association to hold benefit event

The Aloha Chapter of the Alzheimer's Association will be hosting "Moonlight and Magic -- An Italian Evening with Friends" Saturday to benefit Hawaii residents afflicted with the disease.

The evening begins at 6 p.m. in the Hilton Hawaiian Village Coral Ballroom. Featured are a silent auction, two free martini bars, a fine Italian dinner with wine, a live "Sweet Memories Dessert Auction" and dancing. For more information call the Alzheimer's Association, Aloha Chapter, at 591-2771.

Police looking into death of woman at Fort St. Mall

Homicide detectives are investigating the suspicious death of a 41-year-old homeless woman found on Fort Street Mall mauka of King Street early this morning.

Officers found the woman near the Ross Store after an anonymous call from a man.

She was pronounced dead at the Queen's Medical Center shortly after 1:30 a.m.

Bruises were found on her body, and detectives were awaiting the results of an autopsy this morning to determine whether the case is a homicide.

Missing cruise passenger last seen as ship left port

Police want help in finding a former Hawaii resident last seen Feb. 8 in her cabin aboard the cruise ship ms Patriot when it left Hilo for Kona.

No one knows if Mia McDonald, 57, got off the ship while it was docked in Kona or if she was on the ship when the Patriot left Kona for Oahu Feb. 9.

Upon the ship's Honolulu arrival, it was found that her bed had not been slept in and her luggage was in her cabin.

The cruise ship company kept her belongings for eight days while trying to contact her and then reported her missing.

McDonald lived in Hawaii in 1993 until about three years ago and is now a Las Vegas resident. Her maiden name was Mia Yokoyama.

Scam promises loan to help those in debt

HILO -- Police are warning the public about a "debt consolidation" scam in which a Big Island family lost $450.

Responding to a classified newspaper advertisement under "Financing," the family wired $450 to a person contacted through a phone number in the advertisement.

They were seeking a loan of $4,500 but received nothing. When police investigated, the phone number was disconnected.

Anyone who lost money in the scam is asked to call police at 935-3311.

Honolulu man accused in airport bank robbery

A man arrested Monday at Circuit Court in the robbery of the Hawaii National Bank airport branch has been identified as James Robert Breitenbucher, 34, of Honolulu.

Police took Breitenbucher into custody when he appeared for a hearing on a temporary restraining order.

The FBI identified him from a surveillance photograph.

He is accused of robbing the bank at 540 Lagoon Drive at about 12:15 p.m. Friday.

The robber told a teller he had an explosive device and escaped with an undisclosed sum.

Two swimmers rescued in waters near Portlock

The Fire Department rescued two teen-age boys from the China Walls area at Portlock yesterday morning.

Capt. Fred Tom of the Hawaii Kai Fire Station said the boys, both 18, were jumping off the cliff at China Walls when they encountered 3- to 4-foot swells against the side of the rocky cliff and were unable to get out.

The teens were able to swim into a cove that led them along the shoreline. Fire rescue helped one teen to the top of the cliff after he suffered bruises to his knees. He was taken to the Queen's Medical Center.

The other swimmer also suffered bruised knees.

Kailua teen arrested in alleged shooting threat

Police arrested a 13-year-old boy at Kailua Intermediate School who allegedly told one of his teachers he wanted to shoot another teacher yesterday.

The incident was reported to police, and the boy was arrested on suspicion of terroristic threatening.

Alert worker spurs arrest in alleged bank fraud

A 45-year-old man was arrested yesterday after he allegedly tried to cash a fake $5,000 check at American Savings Bank in Kalihi.

At about 6 p.m. yesterday, the man tried to open an account with the check.

A bank employee became suspicious when she tried to confirm the check with Bank of Hawaii and was not able to find an account under his name.

Police were called and the man was arrested on suspicion of forgery.
