Hawaii loses series
against Fresno State

Staff & wire reports

FRESNO, Calif. -- The University of Hawaii baseball team had its chances to score a lot of runs last night, but was not able to deliver enough key hits.

Despite falling behind 5-0 after two innings, the Rainbows came back to trail by one, 5-4, entering the seventh inning, only to have Fresno State's bullpen shut the door over the final three innings.

The Bulldogs completed the three-game sweep of the Western Athletic Conference series with an 8-4 victory at Pete Beiden Field.

The Rainbows loaded the bases with two outs in the second inning and came up empty. They had the sacks full again in the fourth, but Patrick Scalabrini grounded into a double play to end the inning.

In the UH ninth, Lane Nogawa and Matt Purtell singled to start the inning, but FSU's starting catcher Ben Fritz switched roles, taking the mound and retiring the next three batters for his fourth save of the season.

"The guys went out and battled back, but, again, little things happened that hurt," UH acting head coach Carl Furutani said.

"We need a break now and then and we haven't gotten that. You can't fault the players."

The Bulldogs used four singles to score two runs in the first inning. They added three more in the second with two scoring on Brandon Gemoll's home run.

Gregg Omori matched that with a two-run blast over the scoreboard in left-center field in the top of the third.

Arthur Guillen's groundout and Purtell's single to left brought two more Rainbows home in the sixth.

Omori had a one-out single in the seventh, but UH didn't threaten in that inning or the eighth.

"Over the season, it will all balance out. We just have to go to San Jose State and get something going," Furutani said.

Hawaii concludes the road trip with single games against the Spartans Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
