HOUSTON -- The Rice Owls opened their Western Athletic Conference season yesterday by defeating the University of Hawaii-Hilo, 6-2. Hilo falls to No. 1 Rice

Brian Rooke hit a triple and scored on Ryan Peterson's single to give the Vulcans an early lead.
However, the Owls, ranked No. 1 by Collegiate Baseball magazine, answered in the bottom of the first inning.
Jess Roman's RBI single to right and Austin Davis' sacrifice fly gave the Owls a 2-1 lead. Roman hit a solo home run in the third.
Enrique Cruz hit his first collegiate home run, a three-run, line drive to right in the fourth, to complete Rice's scoring.
Skaggs (3-0) allowed six hits, struck out nine and walked none to start the Owls' defense of their WAC co-championship.
Hilo had a good opportunity in the sixth inning, when the first two Vulcans reached base. But the Rice third baseman turned a double play to end the threat.
Hilo's Sergio Reyes, who held Rice scoreless the final 4° innings, allowed one hit, walked none and struck out one. He was Hilo's "one bright spot," according to coach Joey Estrella.
Robert Shimabuku (0-5) took the loss for Hilo.
The teams play again today and conclude the series with an afternoon game tomorrow.

Bryce Uegawachi, Jerimah Yacap and Tom Peters each stroked three hits, leading Hawaii Pacific to a 12-4 baseball victory over George Fox last night at Hans L'Orange Park.The Sea Warriors (5-4) struck for four runs in the first inning, and put the game away with a five-run fifth keyed by Peters' triple.
