UH swimmers
set pool mark

SAN ANTONIO - The University of Hawaii's 200 freestyle relay team of Sarah Simonsen, Lori Thomas, Sara Watchorn and Renate DuPlessis won in pool-record time yesterday in the Western Athletic Conference Women's Swimming and Diving Championships.

The Wahine team was clocked in 1 minute, 31.09 seconds, breaking the Palo Alto College Natatorium record set four years ago by SMU.

The win helped the Wahine complete the first day of competition in second place with 167 points. SMU led the seven-team field with 301.

WAC tourney tickets

Tickets for the WAC basketball tournament are on sale at the Stan Sheriff Center box office.

Ticket packages are $125 per person for the entire five-day men's and women's tournament.

The box office is open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays.

The tournament will be held March 6-10 at the University of Tulsa's Donald W. Reynolds Center.

Lobos lead Burns golf

The University of New Mexico took the second-day lead yesterday in the John Burns Intercollegiate golf tournament at the Leilehua Golf Course.

The Lobos' two-day team score of 23-under-par 553 is five strokes ahead of second place Auburn.

The host University of Hawaii is tied for ninth place in the 19-school tourney at three-over 579.

Hawaii-Hilo is in 19th place at 23-over 599.

Michael Letzig (14-under 130) of New Mexico is the individual leader, while UH's Scott Carlyle (3-under 141, tied for 20th) is the top local golfer so far.

UH softball in poll

The University of Hawaii softball team received 12 votes in the first USA Today/NFCA Coaches Top 25 poll of the season, good enough for 37th place.

Hawaii (10-6) is one of two Western Athletic Conference teams receiving notice in the poll. The other is Fresno State, ranked No. 8.

The Wahine will play an exhibition against its alumnae at 5 p.m. tomorrow at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.
